How To Pass Your Test

Four steps to your driving licence

The driving test now has four parts:

  • Theory
  • Hazard perception
  • Practical driving
  • Show me, tell me

The theory and hazard perception are undertaken at the same appointment and the show me, tell me takes place during the practical driving test.

Step 1: The theory test
You must pass your theory and hazard perception test. The fee is currently £31.50 and you must have a provisional licence to be able to take these sections. Prepare for your test by making sure you have a thorough understanding of the Highway Code and the kind of questions you’ll have to answer. In the theory test you will have 57 minutes to answer 50 questions. The pass mark is 43 correct answers.

Step 2: The hazard perception test
The Hazard Perception test follows the theory test after a few minutes break. You’ll view 14 video clips, which will feature real road scenes and developing hazards of various types such as vehicles and pedestrians. There are a total of 15 hazards in the test. Thirteen clips will contain one hazard and one clip will contain two hazards.

The pass mark for the hazard perception part of the theory test is 44 out of 75.

Step 3: The practical driving test
This involves both practical driving and the show me, tell me test. The fee is £62.50 and it will take about 40 minutes. You will drive the car with the examiner sitting in the passenger seat and giving you instructions regarding the route and manoeuvres he or she wants you to carry out.

As long as you drive as you have been taught you should pass this test! To pass you must not make any serious driving errors and no more than 15 minor faults.

Step 4: The show me, tell me test
This will be carried out at the beginning of your practical test. You will be asked to 'show and tell' how you would carry out safety and maintenance checks on your car. You‘ll need to answer two questions correctly. Answering one or both of your questions incorrectly will count as a driving fault in your test. There are only 19 questions the examiner can choose from so with the correct study it will not be difficult to answer the questions correctly.

With four passes you’ll be able to apply for your full licence. Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as it looks and you’ll get plenty of help with your learning process during your driving lessons.
