Driving Instructor Training

A new career – full or part time

Becoming a driving instructor is a rewarding career – and not only offers enormous job satisfaction, but also the flexibility to work the hours that you want to fit around your existing commitments and family needs.

Whether you choose to make it your full time job or a supplement to your existing work, you’ll need to go through a full instructor training. The first step is to ensure you meet the minimum criteria:

  • You must have held a full driving licence for at least three and a half years.
  • You must be over 21 years of age.
  • You need to be able to spend up to five hours a week to train as an instructor.
  • You should enjoy driving.

You’ll need to be able to stay calm, to be committed to both your own learning and that of your potential students and be able to both maintain control and inspire trust.

The ADI exams are in three parts:

  • Computer-based theory and hazard perception tests
  • Practical test of driving ability
  • Practical test of instructional ability

You must pass each part before the next exam can be taken, and you must complete all three parts within two years of passing the first part.
