Experience, expertise and enthusiasm!
In any professional these three attributes are a real plus – but as a driving instructor they’re essential.
- Knowing all the likely problem areas, issues and challenges that a learner will face only comes with experience.
- Expertise is not just having the knowledge and teaching skills, but also keeping up-to-date to that the learner gets the best possible chance of passing their test. Russell has achieved the coveted Grade 6 instructor from the DSA, which is as high as it goes – and achieved by only a small percentage of instructors.
- Russell Forrester doesn’t just have enthusiasm – he has passion!
"It’s not just the young people who are taking their first lessons; we have plenty of older people who haven’t got around to learning to drive before. They’re often nervous and it’s rewarding to see them gradually gain in confidence as they understand how to manage the controls and the traffic. I never get tired of getting a novice up to the level where they can pass their test!" says Russell.
With a dedicated instructor it makes sense that there’s reliable car to learn in too.
"We don’t teach old-fashioned driving techniques, so we don’t teach in an old-fashioned vehicle either," says Russell with a smile.
His Ford Focus is never more than six months old and has both air conditioning (for a comfortable lesson when the sun comes out) and dual controls, so you’ve always got the safety of Russell being able to take action in an emergency.
"Dual controls aren’t there for the instructor to correct the learner’s driving, they are really a safety device – a good driving instructor only uses them if it’s absolutely essential; however it does put people’s mind at ease to know they’re there," explains Russell.
